Standing out the crowd of 66 competitors from 14 universities, colleges located in HCM City and South of Vietnam, the racing team HUTECH SPEED, led by Nguyễn Minh Huy, did leave their biography on the Champion trophy right after the finals of The 2015’s HUTECH RACE on the 22nd of December.
66 teams gathering at the competition
As informed by Mr. Hoàng Văn Ninh, lecturer of Department of Mechanics-Electrics-Electronics, the chief referee of the fight, HUTECH RACE is annual academic race and has risen to fame and attracted many universities in the country. Inspired by the nation of Japan, the race path is designed an H-shaped lap, 30 cm wide and sports a tracking sensor (INE) to help the racing devices navigate.
Good acceleration and programming strategy proved winning trick
In the tournament phase, each team had 2 opportunities consecutively to race in as less time spent finishing the lap as possible, which didn’t make the teams so much worried. However, the further they went, the more challenges they faced, especially in the stage of choosing the best candidates for the championship.
The great excitement of the competition
According to the organizing committee, the teams that were qualified for the 1/16 round stepped to the play-off phase of the race. Each team had only one chance to race.
In the semi-finals, the 4 best teams were identified: MHPQ (from HCM’s Technical and Economic College); HUTECH SPEED (from HUTECH); PRC1 and PRC2 (from HCM’s University of Technology). And in the finals, the names of HUTECH SPEED and PRC2 remained.
The finals were the playground of experience and bravery
Dr. Nguyễn Hùng- Vice Dean of Department of Mechanics-Electrics-Electronics said: “This is a tricky racing lap with lots of slopes, V-points and A-points overlapping, which caused the racing devices to slip off the road. So, to the team members, great programming skills, proper design language are required. To the first-time attendees, this should be a big challenge.”
In the finals, in order to bring the competitors fairness, each team raced head-to-head twice. Finally, with the superiority in programming techniques and profound experience, HUTECH SPEED won hands-down in both the times.
The tricky lap requiring great programming skills, proper designing language
Mr. Hùng added that the main part of the racing devices was integrated circuit boards, including an AVG circuit, an accelerating board and a microcontroller. But, to win the race, HUTECH SPEED had their own know-how of navigating and accelerating at the right time, and best strategies of “speed up, stop down” and great stability.
Large-scaled race of more than 40 universities and colleges
This year’s competition had attracted more than 40 universities and colleges in HCM and South of Vietnam. Some came from some provinces, such as University of Cần Thơ, Vĩnh Long’s University of Technical Pedagogy. Specially, there were 3 teams from Lê Hồng Phong High School, HCM.

The organizing committee also named the other best for awards; 2nd place to PR2, 3rd to PCR1, Best Design to CTU.
In addition to being an academic playground for applied knowledge, HUTECH RACE is an event to honor the 20th anniversary of Department of Mechanics-Electrics-Electronics.
