International Education Students excited about “Public Speaking & Presentation Skills”

Public speaking and presentation are essential skills in both studies and work. Especially to university students, equipping themselves with these skills is an irreplaceable requirement if they are to succeed in the current integrating era. For that reason, the “Public Speaking and Presentation Skills” workshop organized by Ho Chi Minh University of Technology (HUTECH) Institute of International Education at 9:00 AM, March 15th, was warmly received by many students.

Joining the program, the main speaker - Assoc. Prof. Gerard Cullen shares that, according to current employers’ opinion, Vietnamese students are a dynamic, creative and enthusiastic source of young human resources; they are equipped with significant specialized knowledge basis throughout their university - college educations. However, most of them face great difficulty speaking and making presentations in public, especially when using English. Therefore, beside specialized knowledge, courses and extra curriculum activities with the aim of improving soft skills are of great importance in the education of students.

During the course of the workshop, speaker Gerard Cullen had provided the students with some pieces of advice on how to confidently express themselves in front of a crowd. Among them, relaxed posture, stable state of mind, and eye contact,... make up the best “recipe” for success. In addition, a touch of humor will also spice up the presentation and make it more exciting. Regular practice is also one way to overcome anxiety and boost the students’ confidence when speaking in public.

Being able to confidently speak and make presentations in public in both Vietnamese and English will help the students to showcase their own talent, impress potential employers and facilitate promotion in their career. It is hopeful that our students will utilize the skills earned from this workshop to further their study and training, in order to gain more success in their future career.
