HUTECH Green Summer Volunteers share their thoughts upon returning from distant volunteer sites in Laos

The 2016 HUTECH Green Summer Volunteer campaign has come to an end, but the emotions and meanings of the mission trip still linger. These feelings are expressed through the following article written by Nguyen Quang Anh, a student of 13DKTC07 class, Faculty of Accounting, Finance, and Banking at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) as he shares the interesting experiences from his volunteer trip in Laos.

Even though this is my second time taking part in the Green Summer Volunteer campaign, this year’s volunteer mission in the Laos PDR has been a very special experience.

 Enthusiastic volunteer students in Laos

Wearing the blue volunteer shirt - the color of youth, I arrived in Laos along with my fellow student volunteers feeling a mix of emotions between excitement and anxiety. There were 36 students in my volunteer group from various universities in Vietnam. While each of us was responsible for different tasks, we all share the mission in the role of ambassadors from Vietnam to aid disadvantaged people and rural communities in Laos. Through this volunteer mission, we seek to strengthen the friendship and the bond shared between the two neighboring countries, Vietnam and Laos.

Meaningful activities of volunteers to strengthen the friendship between Vietnam and Laos

This year, we were divided into four main teams that were responsible for different tasks, including children's activities, agriculture, Vietnamese language teaching, and medical examination and medicine distribution. Even though having been assigned different tasks, members of these volunteer squads perform their best in carrying out their duties.

Children share innocent laughter while taking part in various activities organized by the volunteers

I was assigned to the children's activities squad at Sengaloun Primary School in Champasak province that left me with many great memories during my time here. Specifically, I was tasked with teaching a group of 15 children to play the snare drum. They picked up the skill very quickly by mastering three drum songs in just only two days (i.e., Salute the Flag, March on, and As if Uncle Ho were with Us on this Victory Day). When saying our goodbyes, the children greeted me with bright but tearful eyes as if they didn't want us to leave, making me unable to hold back my emotion.

Three drum songs: Salute the Flag, March on, and As if Uncle Ho were with Us on this Victory Day will linger in these children’s minds

Besides the children's activities squad, I also took part in assisting the medical examination and medicine distribution squad on the last day of our volunteer trip. I could clearly see how much effort that the doctors and nurses put into their work and the impoverished conditions experienced by the local people living in these deprived areas.

Goodbye Champasak, goodbye Attapeu, goodbye Sekong with many great memories...

On the last day as we were saying our farewell, the student volunteers and the local Laotians joined hands in singing the song "Goodbye my dearest friend." The warm embraces and firm handshakes seemed to deepen the bonds and mutual feelings shared between the locals and our student volunteer group.

I couldn't hold back my tears. At the same time, I wish we could have done more meaningful activities while spending the short time together as a team.

Nguyen Quang Anh.
