"Duc Thuan Dragon Fruit Jam" project wins the First Prize at the 2019 HUTECH Startup Wings Competition

On April 6, HUTECH Startup Wings organized by Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) crowned Ma Phu Cuong (student of the Institute of Applied Sciences) as the winner of the 2019 startup competition for his project “Duc Thuan Dragon Fruit Jam”.

Launched in November 2018, this year’s HUTECH Startup Wings competition has provided an effective venue for student startup ideas. Through the competition, students have the opportunity to receive valuable support from mentors and businesses in supporting their startup ideas.
 
After several rounds of Preliminary, Semi-final - Training, Pitching, Launching and Startup Show Exhibition, the top five best projects have been selected from the initial 48 entries to advance to the Finals in this year's competition. Taking on the role of judges in the final round are notable business leaders and experts, including Dr. Vu Van Hoang - Chairman and CEO of Dai Viet Construction Joint Stock Company; Mr. Tran Van Lieng - Chairman and CEO of Cacao Vietnam Joint Stock Company; Mr. Nguyen Viet Duc - General Director of Vietnam Creative Start-up Investment Management Joint Stock Company, Senior Advisor of Vietnam Science and Technology Startup Fund; Mr. Phan Hung Dung - General Director of Fiore Healthy Resort and Ms. Nguyen Thi Dieu Hang - Deputy Director of Startup Youth Support Center.

The mentors of the competition

 
Among the Top 5 projects participating in the final round, there are two projects from students of HUTECH Institute of Applied Sciences. These are the practical projects “Duc Thuan Dragon Fruit Jam” by Ma Phu Cuong and “Research on microbial compost from silkworm farming waste” by Pham Thi Thu Hien’s group. Sharing the same idea of clean agricultural production is "Muscle Pig - Teamus" by Tran Thanh Hien group from the Faculty of Accounting - Finance - Banking. Meanwhile, Le Duy Khanh's "Self-learning support system for children" (Faculty of Information Technology) used modern technologies such as IoT and AI platforms. Last but not least, the "Anti-drowning life jacket" of Nguyen Tien Lap’s group (Vietnam - Japan Institute of Technology - VJIT) is recognized for its innovation, practical and social value.

The judges raise questions to the candidates

 
In this final round, each team had 10 minutes to present their projects and 15 minutes to respond to the questions raised by the judges. With the advantages from the product and clear development strategy, contestant Ma Phu Cuong with his project "Duc Thuan Dragon Fruit Jam" was crowned the winner of the 2019 HUTECH Startup Wings competition. This project has been an extension of the startup journey for Ma Phu Cuong from the dragon fruit. Previously, Ma Phu Cuong and his group of friends successfully won the third prize at the 2018 Luong Van Can Talent Award with "Duc Thuan Dragon Fruit Blossom Tea".

By a close margin, the "Self-learning support system for children" project of contestant Le Duy Khanh came in second place. The third prize went to "Anti-drowning life jacket " by Nguyen Tien Lap’s group; two consolation prizes belonged to the projects "Research on microbial compost from silkworm farming waste" and "Muscle pigs - Teamus". The jury also presented the Creative Ideas Award for the project "Making optimal use of dragon fruit waste" by Do Thi Bao Ha (Institute of Applied Sciences).

Besides cash rewards and opportunities to seek investment funding, the First prize of the 2019 HUTECH Startup Wings will advance directly to the Top 100 projects in the 2019 Vietnam Startup Wheel - a national startup contest organized by the Business Startup Support Centre (BSSC) in collaboration with the Young Entrepreneurs Association of Ho Chi Minh City (YBA). Top 3 winners of HUTECH Startup Wings - "Duc Thuan Dragon Fruit Jam", "Self-learning support system for children" and "Anti-drowning life jacket" will also make it into the final round of the 2019 National Startup Contest organized by the Business Forum Newspaper.
