On December 18–19, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH), in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh City Design Association (VDAS), will host the 14th International Conference of the International Society for the Study of Vernacular Settlements (ISVS-14) under the theme “Understanding Vernacular Architectural Heritage and Engaging in Design.”
ISVS is a prestigious international academic forum, held annually in different countries with the aim of researching, preserving, and promoting the values of vernacular settlements. Being hosted for the first time in Vietnam, ISVS-14 seeks to create an international academic space, enabling scholars, experts, architects, designers, and policymakers to engage in discussions and share knowledge and practical experiences in studying, conserving, and developing vernacular architectural heritage in the context of contemporary design.
The conference emphasizes the importance of vernacular architecture in maintaining cultural identity, while also fostering sustainable, creative, and globally integrated design approaches. It also serves as an opportunity to showcase Vietnam’s heritage values and creative potential to the world, creating connections between academia, industry, and the design community.
Key discussion themes at ISVS-14 include:
Theme 1: Understanding Vernacular Architectural Heritage – focusing on climate-adaptive design strategies (passive cooling, thermal mass, spatial orientation), use of local materials, traditional craftsmanship, and examining how ecosystems and traditional spaces deepen the understanding of vernacular heritage.
Theme 2: Design within Heritage Contexts – addressing the balance between preservation and transformation, integrating contemporary functions into heritage contexts while preserving value and integrity.
Theme 3: Design to Enrich Heritage and Engage Communities – highlighting community-driven design processes and heritage-based community initiatives that encourage inclusive design practices.
Theme 4: Design Approaches in Vernacular Architecture and Heritage – studying spatial typologies, material knowledge, and traditional design practices, and applying them to contemporary architecture.
Theme 5: Promoting Vernacular Culture through Multidisciplinary Design – exploring cultural heritage as a living entity through exhibitions, installations, crafts, innovation, and applications in education.
Theme 6: Technology, Documentation, and the Digital Future – applying new technologies such as 3D scanning, photogrammetry, BIM, AR/VR, and AI to document, analyze, archive, and communicate heritage in the digital era.
A wide range of themes will be presented at the upcoming conference
