Students of the English Language Faculty Excited to Learn about Movie Localization in Vietnam

On the afternoon of February 18, the students of the English Language Faculty at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) had the opportunity to gain useful knowledge and information at the seminar on “Exploring the Movie Localization Industry in Vietnam,” organized by the Faculty.

The seminar took place at the Saigon Campus and provided a lot of useful information.

 
 
Mr. Tran Vinh Thanh, currently working at the Translation Department in Thao Le Entertainment Company Limited, served as the speaker at the seminar. The Vice-Dean of the English Language Faculty, Mr, Vo Quoc Dai, MA, also participated in the program.

Mr. Tran Vinh Thanh served as the speaker at the seminar.
 
Opening the seminar, the speaker asked, “What are the differences between localization and translation?” The students excitedly answered this question and presented various opinions and perspectives. Based on their remarks, Mr. Tran Vinh Thanh stated that translation was the process through which a source language was converted into another language whereas localization was bigger in scale, for the aspects of culture and images aimed at the audience needed to be considered during the conversion process, thus allowing the students to understand more about localization.

The students and the speaker discussed the differences between translation and localization.
 
Additionally, the students listened to the valuable information provided by the speaker, particularly, how localization requires permits, the essential steps in the translation process, how the localized contents and images must not violate the Vietnamese culture, how to attract the audience, etc. Furthermore, Mr. Tran Vinh Thanh stressed that, in order to translate well, the translator needs to be proficient in English as well as Vietnamese and knows some tips on how to translate a movie.

The speaker shared the information on the translation process and some helpful tips to translate a movie.

The students paid close attention to the speaker’s presentation.
 
During the program, the students also had the chance to practice with exciting translation exercises, to pose questions regarding the challenges one could face in the localization industry, to enquire about career opportunities,… and received enthusiastic responses from the speaker. Through these activities, the students were able to accumulate useful knowledge regarding the movie localization industry in Vietnam, thus allowing them to boldly try out and pursue their passion in this incredibly interesting field.
