CATALYST Project - Communicative Approaches in University Vocational Teaching Methodology Focusing on Improving Educational Yield and Sustainability 3

The CATALYST project has been funded by the European Commission through the Capacity Building in Higher Education Programme (CBHE) as part of the Key Action 2 projects. CBHE is the European Union’s programme whose aim is to improve, develop, and modernize higher education systems and to support cooperation of Partner Countries across different regions of the world such as Asia mainly through university cooperation projects. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) has been a member of the CATALYST project consortium making up of 13 academic partners from Romania, Germany, UK, Ireland, Laos, and Vietnam.

The CATALYST project aims to the develop and implement of a comprehensive pedagogical Core Curricula using an ECT/Tuning Modular design for university vocational teaching for Vietnam and Lao PDR. After the project Kick-off meeting held in Ho Chi Minh City in December 2016, HUTECH has been actively working and collaborating with the other project partners under the guidance of the EU project coordinator and the Steering Committee to carry out the activities within the scope of the CATALYST projects, including the design and development of 12 training modules in line with the Bologna principles, 3 piloting events of selected lessons from the developed modules, National Awareness Day and various supporting activities.

The topics of the 12 Modules that form the Core Curriculum are identified based on the SWOT needs analysis of the vocation education situation in the partner countries. Stressed on the communicative teaching approach, the lessons are designed with the learners in mind. HUTECH was involved in the formulation of Module 1A (Communicative Approach for General Vocational Education) and 1B (Communicative Approach for Vocational Language Education), while taking the lead role in the design and content development of Module 2 (ICT/E-Learning Based Vocational Teaching and Learning Approaches). The module contents have been improved through each successive piloting at the partner universities.
