From shared practices to climate action: HUTECH advances its sustainability journey

With sustainability becoming an increasingly important priority in higher education, HUTECH has continued to strengthen its institutional approach through knowledge exchange, international collaboration, and concrete climate commitments. Two recent initiatives, the Green Visit 2026 at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) and HUTECH’s participation in the CANIE Accord, demonstrate how the University is gradually translating sustainable development goals into practices across education, governance, campus operations, and international engagement.
On July 30, HUTECH representatives participated in the Green Visit 2026 at UEH, an opportunity for the two universities to exchange experiences and explore practical approaches to sustainable higher education development. The program offered insights into UEH’s journey toward becoming a multidisciplinary and sustainable university, with discussions covering green transformation, technology and digital solutions in university governance, innovation, and the social responsibility of higher education institutions.

Beyond the exchange of institutional experiences, the visit provided HUTECH with practical perspectives on how sustainability can be incorporated into different areas of university development. From teaching and research to governance, campus operations, and community engagement, sustainable development requires coordinated efforts across the institution rather than isolated initiatives. The exchange therefore created opportunities for HUTECH to learn from good practices while identifying approaches that can be adapted to its own context and long-term development priorities.
Building on this commitment, HUTECH reached another sustainability milestone in August by becoming the first higher education institution in Vietnam to join the CANIE Accord, an international initiative of the Climate Action Network for International Educators (CANIE). The Accord brings together higher education institutions and organizations seeking to address the environmental impact associated with international education while promoting greater climate responsibility across the sector.
As part of its participation, HUTECH registered 57 action commitments across five areas: Leadership and Direction; Emissions Inventory and Reduction; Travel; Facilities, Operations and Procurement; and Climate Education. The commitments provide a structured framework for the University to examine how climate considerations can be incorporated into institutional decision-making and everyday practices, from resource use and mobility to education and international cooperation.
Importantly, joining the CANIE Accord represents more than participation in an international sustainability network. Through its action commitments, HUTECH is establishing a structured approach to progressively integrate sustainable practices into its everyday activities, spanning institutional policies, emissions measurement and reduction, travel, campus operations, and climate education. The initiative also creates opportunities for the University to exchange experiences, access new sustainability initiatives, and strengthen collaboration with the international education community.
