SSH2021 National Conference: The role of non-public universities in the training of global citizens in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities

On August 7, the SSH 2021 National Conference on “Global citizenship training in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities at non-public universities in Vietnam” was successfully organized by the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH). 

Taking place in a virtual format, the conference provided an academic forum for the participation of researchers, social scientists, and reputable experts in various disciplines of social sciences and humanities to discuss the role of non-public universities in training global citizens for these respective fields.

Among the leading experts participating in the SSH 2021 Conference, there were notable representations from Prof. Dr. Ho Si Quy - Member of the Academic Council, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Van Hoa - Former President of University of Foreign Language Studies, University of Danang; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Huu Ai - University of Economics, University of Danang; Prof. Dr. Sc. Tran Ngoc Them - Director of Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities at HUTECH.

The conference is the opportunity for leading experts and researchers to connect and exchange the latest research findings and subject knowledge in their respective fields of study

Also present at the SSH 2021 Conference was the participation of several leaders and senior administrators of HUTECH, including Dr. Kieu Tuan - Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the University’s Board of Directors; Prof. Dr. Sc. Ho Dac Loc - HUTECH President; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - HUTECH Vice President along with other members of the University’s Board of Presidents. The conference also attracted a considerable amount of interest from researchers and lecturers from universities across the country joining in the opening address and subcommittee sessions.

Training of global citizens: An urgent issue in the age of globalization

In his conference opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan asserted, “In the age of globalization, there is a strong need for social science and humanities students, especially those from non-public institutions, to affirm their role and position on the international stage.”

Besides the keynote presentations by Prof. Dr. Ho Si Quy, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Van Hoa, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Huu Ai, the conference programs were also contributed by several researchers and lecturers from other universities in four different sub-committees, namely Global Citizenship Training in Social Sciences and Humanities, Issues in Global Citizenship Education, Culture and Tourism Issues in Global Citizenship Training, and Teaching Methods and Foreign Languages in Global Citizenship Training. Overall, there were 16 reports presented among these parallel sessions at the conference.

On behalf of HUTECH, Prof. Dr. Sc. Tran Ngoc Them delivered his keynote presentation, titled “Global citizenship education in Social Sciences and Humanities at non-public universities in Vietnam” during the conference opening session. Among the main points of his report, Prof. Them highlighted the advantages and limitations of non-public universities in training global citizens in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Among the researchers and conference participants, many expressed a strong consensus on the high practical value of the SSH 2021 Conference, as well as the conference theme and programs. Moreover, it was also an opportunity for students - future global citizens - to participate in the conference, learn from scholars and experts, discuss the various issues surrounding the role and responsibilities of a global citizen. With the knowledge gained from such a valuable conference, students are more confident in planning out the orientation for their studies and research.

It also furthers the commitment to educate future generations of highly qualified, gifted, and dynamic global citizens that are ready to assert themselves confidently on the global stage.
