On July 1, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) held an online meeting with the leadership of Niigata Institute of Technology (NIIT), Japan, to discuss potential collaborations in academic and internship programs between the two institutions.
Representatives from HUTECH included Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Xuan Lam - Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, Prof. Dr. Le Van Canh - Vice President, Dr. Ly Thien Trang - Vice President, Dr. Nguyen Chi Thang - Director of the Institute of International Education, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hung - Director of the Vietnam – Japan Institute of Technology (VJIT), Ms. Doan Thi Minh Nguyen - Vice Dean of the Faculty of Japanese Studies, and Ms. Nguyen Lan Huong – Deputy Head, Department of International Relations and Project Management.

Representatives from NIIT included Dr. Yuuji Tanabe - President, Dr. Hajime Murakami - Vice President, Mr. Hideyuki Miida - Chief of Staff, Mr. Takehiro Miura - Head of Academic Affairs, Mr. Satoru Shingai - Head of Public Relations and Admissions, Ms. Naoko Oshimi - Deputy Head of Public Relations and Admissions and other faculty members from the university.
During the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Xuan Lam expressed his gratitude to Mr. Fujishima, a long-time supporter of both HUTECH and VJIT, for introducing and facilitating the partnership between HUTECH and NIIT. He also presented an overview of HUTECH and VJIT, highlighting HUTECH’s focus on application-oriented education. Prof. Dr. Le Van Canh further emphasized the university’s international joint programs as a key component of its educational internationalization strategy.

In response, Dr. Yuuji Tanabe gave an overview of NIIT, a university with strengths in technical education, particularly in: Electronics and Information Engineering (Electrical – Electronic Engineering, Information and Smart Communication), Architecture and Urban Engineering (Architecture, Urban Engineering, and Disaster Mitigation), Mechanical and System Engineering (Advanced Manufacturing, Robotics and Systems Control), Food and Environmental Chemistry (Food and Environmental Chemistry), Value-Creation Systems in Business (Regional Innovation Strategy).
NIIT representatives highlight the university’s strengths in engineering education
The two sides discussed future directions for collaboration, with a focus on student transfer programs. HUTECH students will have the opportunity to transfer to NIIT from their third year and receive degrees awarded by NIIT. In addition, the two universities plan to launch specialized training courses in select engineering fields, taught in English for HUTECH students at NIIT. Short-term internships, ranging from 2 weeks to 2 months, and 2-week summer programs at both HUTECH and NIIT, which integrate English and Japanese learning and are especially designed for third and fourth-year students, were also thoroughly discussed.

Finally, HUTECH and NIIT agreed to move forward with signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as a foundation for implementing the proposed initiatives. Leadership from both universities are expected to conduct in-person visits and meetings in the near future. This partnership lays an important foundation for developing practical and sustainable academic exchange and internship programs for students.
