With the aim of strengthening research capacity and expanding international academic opportunities for faculty members and postgraduate learners, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) held a working session with the University of Manitoba (UoM). The meeting focused on discussing directions for research collaboration and advanced education in the fields of biotechnology and environmental science.
Representing the UoM were Dr. David Levin, Professor in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, along with members of his delegation. Representing HUTECH were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thai Van Nam, Director of the Institute of Postgraduate Studies, Ms. Nguyen Lan Huong, Head of the Department of International Relations and Project Management, Dr. Hoang Ngoc Nhung, Deputy Head of the Department, together with doctoral candidates from the University’s research groups.
The meeting took place in an open and constructive atmosphere, with the participation of representatives from both institutions
At the beginning of the session, Dr. David Levin provided an overview of the Department of Biosystems Engineering, a unit with more than 100 years of development history and the only biosystems engineering program in Western Canada. He also shared detailed information about UoM’s postgraduate offerings, particularly financial support policies for research activities, which create valuable learning and research opportunities for HUTECH postgraduate students and researchers interested in studying and conducting research in Canada.

During the academic exchange, Dr. David Levin presented the main research directions currently pursued by his group, with a particular focus on polyethylene plastics. This widely used material is difficult to decompose and has significant environmental impacts, making it a topic of growing interest within the international scientific community.

Another important topic of the meeting was the discussion of the SEED scholarships (Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development). This initiative of the Canadian Government supports academic exchange and research collaboration between Canada and ASEAN countries. The program offers opportunities for HUTECH faculty members, postgraduate students, and doctoral candidates to participate in short term study and research programs in Canada, thereby enhancing professional capacity and expanding international academic networks.
