Marketing – International Business students step into global journalism through Journo Eskwela program

With the aim of training a new generation of bold, creative, and globally-minded journalists, a group of lecturers and students from the Faculty of Marketing – International Business at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) participated in the online international exchange program Journo Eskwela—an academic initiative organized by Batangas State University (Philippines), held from May 6 to 19.

Under the theme “Empowering Student-Journalists for Global Impact,” the “Journo Eskwela” program brought together more than 80 students and lecturers from leading regional universities such as Batangas State University (Philippines), IPB University, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (Indonesia), along with a team of international journalism and communication experts. Representing HUTECH were 21 students and 2 lecturers from the Faculty of Marketing – International Business, marking a significant step in the internationalization of the university’s media education efforts.

Conducted entirely on Zoom across five intensive sessions, the program offered a multicultural learning experience and hands-on training in international journalism. Each two-hour session covered topics such as news writing and headline creation, photojournalism, data journalism, digital storytelling, newsroom simulation, photo challenges, publication design, and final product presentation. Students not only absorbed theoretical knowledge but also engaged in article writing, cross-country teamwork, and received direct feedback from international instructors.

HUTECH students gained hands-on experience in global journalism through five intensive Zoom sessions

Beyond being an academic platform, Journo Eskwela served as an opportunity for students from different countries to explore cultural diversity, broaden global perspectives, and build professional networks. HUTECH students collaborated with peers from the Philippines and Indonesia to produce multimedia journalism pieces, honing their writing, design, and communication skills while learning to navigate a professional international media environment.

For participating lecturers, the program provided a chance to co-design learning activities, guide students through the creation of in-depth journalistic products, and exchange experiences across journalism education systems. Accompanying students throughout the journey—from workshops and editing to final presentations—allowed faculty to not only witness student growth firsthand but also enhance their own pedagogical skills and international academic engagement.

At the conclusion of the program, each student was awarded a certificate of completion from the organizers, a standout addition to the resumes of young professionals pursuing careers in journalism and communications. However, the most valuable takeaway from “Journo Eskwela” goes beyond knowledge and skills—it lies in the spirit of continuous learning, multicultural adaptability, and the aspiration to create journalistic content that resonates positively on a global scale.
