Stepping beyond the familiar classroom setting, students majoring in Tourism and Travel Services Management from the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) embarked on a meaningful journey of learning and discovery in the Kingdom of Cambodia from July 1 to July 4.
The trip was part of the course “Tour Practice 1 (TOU536)”, a key field-based component in the major’s curriculum. Guided by Dr. Trinh Minh Chanh - Head of Tourism and Travel Services Management, and Ms. Phan Thi Thuy Phuong - Head of Hotel Management, the students had the opportunity to gain practical experience in a professional environment in a neighboring country where culture and tourism are closely intertwined.
The trip was an essential practical component of the major's curriculum
More than just a sightseeing tour to iconic sites like Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple, Ta Prohm, or the Royal Palace of Cambodia, this journey allowed the students to “step into the shoes” of real tour guides. They practiced welcoming the group, giving commentary on the bus, and handling unexpected situations during the tour. Every activity was a chance to sharpen their professional skills and enhance their industry etiquette.
Students took on the roles of real tour guides throughout the journey
A particularly valuable part of the experience was at the Xa Mat and Bavet international border gates, where students observed and learned the procedures for immigration – a process usually taught only in theory. This hands-on experience gave them a clearer understanding of the complexity and precision required in international tourism operations.
Students gained firsthand knowledge of immigration procedures during the trip
The excitement continued through cultural immersion activities. At the Thnot Village, students explored local life and even joined villagers in making traditional cakes, gaining a meaningful and human-centered experience. Meals featuring dishes such as Amok, Pro Hok fermented fish paste, conveyor belt hotpot, and a buffet of over 80 items helped students fully appreciate the diversity of Cambodian cuisine, an essential element in tour design and guest services.
The memorable journey concluded with a warm Gala Dinner in Phnom Penh
The trip ended on a high note with a heartfelt Gala Dinner in Phnom Penh. During the evening, students shared their reflections, looked back on their meaningful experiences, received keepsakes, and listened to encouraging messages from their instructors. The gala marked not only the end of the trip, but also a turning point in their personal growth, from professional awareness to the confidence needed to enter the workforce. Through this experience, each student took a step toward developing their individual competence, preparing to meet the growing demands of the modern tourism industry.
