HUTECH and University of Newcastle students connect through Nucleo experiences and technical exchange

With the aim of providing students with meaningful international experiences, on December 8, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) welcomed the University of Newcastle (UoN, Australia) to the University Challenge Day 2025. The event was a vibrant academic and cultural exchange where students from both institutions engaged in creative activities, connection building, and multidimensional learning.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Nguyen Lan Huong, Head of the Department of International Relations and Project Management, expressed her honor in welcoming students from UoN to HUTECH in an event with a strong global connection. She emphasized that the gathering was not only an opportunity for exchange, but also an inspiring journey in which students from both universities broadened their perspectives, explored cultural diversity, and experienced dynamic and creative academic and technical activities.

In his remarks, Prof. Terry Summers from UoN outlined the university’s 60-year development journey and highlighted its outstanding strengths in Electrical and Automation Engineering, a field consistently ranked among the leading disciplines in Australia and within the world’s top ten. He shared his positive impression of the students’ learning spirit and encouraged them to consider UoN as a potential destination for postgraduate studies, building on the strong academic foundation they are currently developing. Prof. Terry Summers also emphasized the significance of the exchange, viewing it as an important connection that opens broader access to international education for students.

The atmosphere became especially lively during the game “Tech Swap,” where students from both universities were given five minutes to memorize Vietnamese technical vocabulary such as “màn hình,” “bàn phím,” “vi mạch,” “pin,” and “tôi yêu HUTECH.” The enthusiastic efforts of UoN students to pronounce the words, together with the energetic encouragement from HUTECH students, created memorable moments of cultural exchange and strengthened connections between the two educational communities.

Continuing the program, Mr. Do Pham Hoang, Lecturer at the Institute of Engineering, delivered a compelling presentation explaining why the Nucleo platform has become a prominent choice in contemporary engineering education. He noted that the strength of Nucleo lies in the high performance STM32F4 microcontroller series, featuring an ARM Cortex M4 core with FPU, clock speeds of up to 180 MHz, and a wide range of peripheral interfaces including USART, CAN, ADC, DAC, SPI, and I2C. These features enable students to easily apply the platform in experiments, simulations, and the development of practical technological solutions.

The program provided both valuable knowledge and meaningful exchange opportunities for students from both institutions

Based on the technical insights shared, students were divided into three groups and tasked with proposing the most suitable technical platform for learning and research activities. Each group not only selected a toolkit but also explained its practical value, development potential, and suitability for academic environments. This activity challenged students’ analytical thinking while also helping them develop the ability to propose technological solutions, an important preparation for future large scale engineering projects.
