AI is creating new possibilities in healthcare while raising questions about reliability, data security, and technology governance. These issues were the focus of an online expert talk hosted by Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) on September 24.
The event was part of the HUTECH Online Expert Talk Series 2026–2027, held under the overarching theme “Contemporary Issues in Sustainable Practices.” The September session, titled “Demystifying AI in Healthcare Technology,” brought together approximately 140 scholars, lecturers, researchers, and students from HUTECH and its international partner network, with participants from the United States, China, Taiwan, India, Bangladesh, the Philippines, and other countries.
The session featured Prof. William C. B. Harding of Trine University, USA, an experienced scientist, professor, author, and technical expert who holds the title of Distinguished Technical Fellow, Emeritus
Prof. Harding began by exploring the nature of artificial intelligence from a perspective that extends beyond the traditional Turing test. He introduced concepts and methods such as machine learning, natural language processing, and transformer architecture to explain how AI processes complex data.

Building on this foundation, the speaker guided participants through a range of applications in healthcare and medical device manufacturing. Examples included home-based vision systems powered by AI and machine learning, smart mirrors that support the early detection of skin lesions, AI-assisted self-navigating catheters for cardiovascular interventions, and augmented reality (AR) technologies for point-of-care applications and military medicine.

Alongside these opportunities, the session addressed ethical concerns and the reliability of the technology. Prof. Harding examined “AI hallucinations,” in which systems generate inaccurate information that appears convincing, creating a risk that errors may spread through academic literature. These concerns underscore the need to pay particular attention to quality and reliability when applying AI in healthcare.
The discussion also explores data outliers, patient information security, and global standards for AI governance

The opening session of the HUTECH Online Expert Talk Series 2026–2027 offered a more comprehensive perspective on contemporary issues in healthcare technology while strengthening academic connections between HUTECH and its international network of experts.
