With the presentation “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education for Sustainable Development: HUTECH’s Role in Ho Chi Minh City’s Innovation Ecosystem,” Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hung, Director of the Vietnam-Japan Institute of Technology (VJIT) at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH), offered fresh perspectives at the Ho Chi Minh City Week of Innovation, Science, Technology, and Entrepreneurship 2025 (WISE HCMC 2025).

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hung speaks at WISE HCMC 2025
As a large-scale annual event, WISE HCMC 2025 brings together key players in the city’s innovation ecosystem, including government agencies, businesses, universities, and the startup community. The event serves not only as a forum for knowledge sharing but also as a platform to promote collaboration, generate new initiatives, and advance Ho Chi Minh City’s goal of becoming a knowledge-based economy and a regional innovation hub.
HUTECH’s participation highlights the university’s recognized contributions to innovation and entrepreneurship. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hung presented HUTECH’s education strategy in detail, emphasizing that courses on innovation and entrepreneurship are fully integrated into the curriculum and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These courses include Project Design Thinking, Innovation and Entrepreneurial Mindset, and Project Design 3, all taught using the Project Design Education (PDE) approach.
The presentation focused on innovation and entrepreneurship training for students
The PDE program is structured around five pillars: entrepreneurship, hands-on learning, innovation mindset, leadership skills, and international collaboration. Students develop practical problem-solving skills, propose solutions and projects within and across disciplines, and gain the ability to communicate effectively in group settings. Collaboration with Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT) ensures that the program incorporates advanced knowledge and methods in innovation and entrepreneurship.
Beyond student benefits, the PDE program aims to provide Ho Chi Minh City with a talent pool of innovative thinkers who can deliver practical solutions to urban challenges and connect with the WISE startup ecosystem. At the same time, PDE faces certain challenges that need to be addressed to maximize its impact. HUTECH’s role is therefore more than that of a traditional university; it serves as a multifaceted pillar contributing to positive social impact.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hung emphasizes HUTECH’s shift toward an OECD-style university model
Looking ahead, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hung explained that HUTECH is transforming into a university focused on innovation and entrepreneurship based on OECD guidelines. The strategic program includes developing an international-standard education system guided by the OECD framework and the eight HEInnovate dimensions. HUTECH promotes applied research and commercialization, encourages spin-offs, and fosters a culture of entrepreneurship among students and faculty. All training and research projects are linked to the SDGs, aiming for solutions that are both innovative and socially impactful.
The university also plans to develop and expand innovation spaces, including makerspaces, fab labs, studios, incubators, and mentor networks, along with support centers for intellectual property, legal affairs, and commercialization. HUTECH will actively internationalize its innovation initiatives, expanding partnerships with foreign institutions and global experts to elevate research and training to international standards.
HUTECH students present projects at WISE HCMC 2025
Alongside Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hung’s presentation, HUTECH students showcased the project “Flood-Resistant Floating Frames for Crops,” a technological solution for climate-resilient agriculture. This project previously won second place in the “Innovative Ideas Competition for Universities in the Southeast Region,” demonstrating the effectiveness of HUTECH’s project design and problem-solving-oriented training approach.
