HUTECH lecturers strengthen their quantitative educational research skills with U.S. expert

Launched on 7 October, the training program “Exploring Quantitative Educational Research Methods: Introduction to Quantitative Educational Research Methods” equips lecturers with methods for designing research, analyzing data, and using scientific evidence to improve the quality of teaching and educational research.

The program brings together 40 lecturers from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) and Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance (UEF) to explore educational research through challenges arising in their own teaching practice.

Speaking at the program, Dr. Ly Thien Trang, Vice President of HUTECH, thanked Prof. Dr. Albert Ritzhaupt for his professional contributions to HUTECH and UEF. She emphasized the close relationship between academic research and teaching, noting that research findings can provide a basis for lecturers to adjust their methods, improve educational effectiveness, and create greater value for learners. The university leadership expects the training series to encourage knowledge sharing, mentoring, and research collaboration among lecturers.

The training series is led by Prof. Dr. Albert Ritzhaupt, Professor of Educational Technology and Computer Science Education at the University of Florida, USA, who also holds various professional roles within the international research community. Drawing on his experience in research and scholarly publishing, he helps lecturers gain a clear understanding of the process of developing a research project: identifying a problem, formulating questions, selecting methods, analyzing data, and interpreting results.

In the opening session, “Introduction to Quantitative Educational Research Methods,” lecturers explore the foundations of quantitative research and the role of data in answering educational questions. The training clarifies the connections between the research problem, research design, and analysis plan; it helps participants understand that every choice of variables, survey sample, or statistical method directly affects the reliability and value of the findings.

Subsequent sessions are designed around practical work with educational datasets. Using JASP software, lecturers will progressively explore descriptive and inferential statistics, data visualization, assumption testing, t-tests, ANOVA, ANCOVA, correlation, linear regression, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and reliability testing. Combining methodological knowledge with hands-on analysis helps lecturers select appropriate techniques, interpret results accurately, and present well-supported conclusions.

The training series broadens research perspectives and lays the groundwork for lecturers to apply data in their teaching practice

The training series runs from 7 October to 25 November, with sessions held every Wednesday afternoon. Alongside providing additional research tools, the program helps establish a practice of academic exchange, connects lecturers with shared interests, and lays the groundwork for developing interdisciplinary research projects. This provides practical support for HUTECH and UEF to improve the quality of educational research and apply data analysis findings to enhance educational activities.
