Recently, from December 10–11, a delegation of faculty members from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) took a working trip to Singapore Polytechnic (SP), Singapore. The visit was part of a preparatory training initiative for Learning Express (LeX) 2026, an international academic exchange and community engagement project highly anticipated for the coming year.
The delegation included faculty representatives from several of HUTECH’s key faculties and institutes: Dr. Tran Tuan Nam, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering; Dr. Le Tri Hieu, Lecturer at the Institute of Engineering; Ms. Trinh Ngoc Anh, Lecturer at the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management; and Mr. Vu Anh Chien, Lecturer at the Faculty of Business Administration. This core team will play a central role in leading and providing academic guidance to students throughout the upcoming project.
HUTECH faculty trained in Singapore, ready to lead Learning Express 2026
Learning Express (LEX) is an international experiential learning initiative launched by Singapore Polytechnic in 2012. Over more than a decade of development, LEX has established itself as a reputable initiative across ASEAN and has expanded to China, India, and Japan, engaging more than 10,000 students. In Vietnam, HUTECH is one of SP’s key strategic partners. The year 2026 marks the third time LEX will be implemented at HUTECH, promising innovative and impactful experiences for students from both institutions.
Faculty members participating in the initiative take on two main roles:
- Facilitator: Faculty members who directly guide students academically, providing support, direction, and assistance in addressing challenges that arise during group work.
- Coordinator: Individuals responsible for coordinating the overall initiative and related activities (logistics, communications, stakeholder coordination, etc.), ensuring the initiative is implemented smoothly and effectively as planned.
The training focused intensively on the Project Design Thinking process
To ensure strong academic quality for LEX 2026, the training in Singapore placed a strong emphasis on the Project Design Thinking process. HUTECH faculty members worked closely with SP experts to discuss and practice four core stages of implementation: Sense & Sensibility (mindset preparation and contextual understanding), Empathy (understanding stakeholders), Ideation (idea development), and Prototype (solution modeling).
In addition to theoretical foundations, the delegation was introduced to practical toolkits to support students, including interview question design techniques, data analysis methods such as data clustering, approaches to identifying core insights, and the development of user personas. These skills are particularly critical for faculty in the Facilitator role, enabling them not only to deliver knowledge but also to guide thinking, foster collaboration, and address issues arising in multicultural team settings.
The visit further strengthened the cooperative relationship between the two institutions
During the visit, faculty members also toured Singapore Polytechnic’s modern training models and advanced facilities, further reinforcing the friendly and collaborative partnership between the two educational institutions.

The LEX 2026 is expected to last 12 days and will bring together 30 HUTECH students and 30 SP students. What sets Learning Express apart is its focus beyond cultural exchange, emphasizing the application of Design Thinking to address real-world challenges. Students will be organized into small groups, conduct fieldwork in local communities, analyze unmet community needs, and collaboratively develop creative and sustainable solutions.
