With the project titled “Imprints of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in the Interior Design of Lach Cach Station Restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City,” Nguyễn Thị Bích Ngọc, a 2021 cohort student majoring in Interior Design from the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH), was honored with a Consolation Prize at the Loa Thanh Awards 2025.
The project also served as Bích Ngọc’s graduation thesis, completed under the supervision of Ms. Nguyễn Cung Ngọc Thủy, Lecturer in Interior Design. It was additionally recognized as the best graduation project of her cohort.

Bích Ngọc shared that she initially faced many uncertainties in choosing an appropriate creative direction, particularly in finding a way to incorporate historical elements into design in a subtle and emotionally resonant manner. Documentary footage of the 1954 campaign left a profound impression on her, evoking pride and deep gratitude for the sacrifices made by previous generations. “I was deeply moved when revisiting the footage of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign and realized that history does not exist only in books, but as real emotions that can be conveyed through design.” This inspiration motivated her to treat history as the core material of the project and to view design as a language of remembrance and tribute to the past.

Based on the progression of the campaign, Bích Ngọc structured the restaurant space into four narrative stages. The first space evokes the nationwide mobilization toward the Northwest, expressed through muted tones, raw materials, and a solid spatial structure. The second stage recreates the momentum of the opening victory at Him Lam Hill, highlighted by decisive lighting and strong geometric forms.
The first floor leads viewers into the climax of the campaign. Intense days of combat are represented through contrasting colors and dynamic, rhythmic lines. The journey concludes in the VIP dining room, where the image of the red flag with a yellow star flying atop the De Castries bunker becomes the emotional focal point, creating a space filled with profound national pride. Bích Ngọc shared, “I hope that those who enter this space will feel the spirit of a heroic historical period and come to cherish the value of peace today even more.”

The achievement reflects Bích Ngọc’s serious academic commitment and efforts
The Loa Thanh Awards 2025 jury highly appreciated the way Bích Ngọc transformed historical emotions into a design language with clear practical application. The coherent layout, refined material selection, and effective spatial organization clearly demonstrated her professional maturity. This achievement reflects her serious academic commitment and sustained efforts throughout the project development process.
