Proactively integrating, experiencing international learning environments, and testing themselves in multinational academic activities, 4 students from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) left remarkable impressions at the ASEAN Student Experiential Mobility Programme (ASEMO @ UUM 2026).
The program was organized by the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), bringing together 250 students from 44 universities and educational institutions in the region. HUTECH representatives included Ly Vu Nhu Ngoc, Luong Linh Dan, Tran Thi Thuy Tien, and Ho Phan Truc Anh, students from the Vietnam–Korea Institute of Technology, the Institute of International Education, and the Faculty of Finance-Commerce.

With the theme “Empowering ASEAN Youth Leaders: AI, Innovation and Sustainability,” the program focused on issues strongly impacting regional development, including artificial intelligence, innovation, leadership, and sustainability. Activities were carried out in two phases: online learning from August 2–8 and onsite experience at UUM, Malaysia from August 12–18.
During the online phase, students engaged with topics on ASEAN geopolitics, innovation and entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence (AI), leadership, and sustainability, guided by UUM lecturers and experts. These sessions exposed learners to pressing regional issues while laying the foundation for idea exchange and development in the next stage.
After the online learning phase, the journey continued with onsite activities at UUM, Malaysia, including campus tours, youth leadership dialogues, exploration of study programs and higher education opportunities at UUM, community engagement activities, and Malaysian cultural experiences.
HUTECH students join international peers in tackling challenges
Studying and living alongside students from many countries placed participants in a multicultural environment. Language use, adaptability, idea exchange, and teamwork were applied regularly in each activity.
The highlight of ASEMO @ UUM 2026 was the ASEAN Future Challenge 2026. Students were divided into multinational groups to design and develop projects in four areas: Artificial Intelligence, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Leadership, and Sustainability. Each group identified ideas, refined solutions, and presented projects through competition rounds requiring creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and presentation skills in an international setting.
Many academic, exchange, and cultural experiences at UUM
At the Semi-Final Presentation, HUTECH students achieved 2nd Top-Tier in two categories. Ho Phan Truc Anh’s group earned 2nd Top-Tier in the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Track, while Luong Linh Dan and Tran Thi Thuy Tien’s group achieved 2nd Top-Tier in the Artificial Intelligence Track. These results reflected their initiative in developing ideas, collaborating with international teammates, and presenting projects to the panel.
ASEMO @ UUM 2026 expands academic experience, international connections, and integration capacity for HUTECH students
Alongside academic content, the program also created space for cultural exchange and ASEAN student community connection. At the ASEAN Cultural Night and Closing Ceremony, students from different countries showcased cultural identities, shared experiences, and strengthened bonds after their journey of learning and working together in Malaysia.
