On October 13, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) and Leibniz University Hannover (LUH), Germany, discussed research collaboration and the possibility of developing joint master’s programs under Erasmus Mundus.
During the meeting, Dr. Ly Thien Trang, Vice President of HUTECH, and Dr. Birgit Barden-Läufer, Director of LUH’s International Office, introduced their respective universities and shared information about their academic programs, research, and international partnerships. These initial discussions laid the groundwork for exploring cooperation based on their strengths and previous experience working together.

HUTECH and LUH previously participated in BESTOFRAC, a project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program from 2017 to 2022. The project focused on modeling, simulating, and optimizing hydraulic fracturing techniques for shale oil and gas extraction, alongside environmental risk assessment. HUTECH was the only Vietnamese university in this international research consortium.
Building on this academic connection, the two universities explored opportunities to conduct joint research, share knowledge, and connect faculty members and researchers with complementary expertise. Their previous collaboration is expected to help identify suitable research directions and expand opportunities for academic exchange.

Both universities also expressed interest in graduate education partnerships, particularly the possibility of developing joint master’s programs under Erasmus Mundus. These discussions opened up opportunities to integrate teaching and research while giving students more options to pursue an international education.
The meeting further strengthened the relationship between HUTECH and LUH and provided a foundation for gradually translating shared interests into concrete collaborative activities. Expanding cooperation in research and master’s education offers opportunities to develop international academic initiatives and broaden educational options for HUTECH students.

Founded in 1831, LUH is one of Germany’s leading higher education institutions and a member of TU9, an alliance of leading German technical universities. It has more than 25,000 students, approximately 14% of whom are international, and offers 82 academic programs across nine faculties. LUH is recognized for research in areas such as quantum optics, biomedical technology, and production engineering, while also pursuing interdisciplinary research in economics, law, and the social sciences.
