HUTECH pioneers CANIE Accord participation in Vietnam, integrating climate action into sustainable education

As the first higher education institution in Vietnam to join the CANIE Accord, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) has registered 57 action commitments across five key areas, strengthening its connections with the international education community and further embedding sustainability into education, operations, and global engagement.
HUTECH officially becomes the first higher education institution in Vietnam to sign the CANIE Accord
The CANIE Accord promotes concrete actions to reduce the environmental impact of international education, raise awareness of climate change, and strengthen the responsibility of educational institutions in addressing global challenges. By joining the Accord, HUTECH becomes part of a network of universities and educational organizations that share a commitment to climate action, creating further opportunities to exchange initiatives, experiences, and sustainable practices.
The CANIE network includes universities around the world such as the University of Auckland (New Zealand), Western Sydney University (Australia), the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom), KU Leuven (Belgium), Northeastern University (United States), and Vellore Institute of Technology (India). Notably, the University of Auckland, Western Sydney University, and Vellore Institute of Technology are also international partners of HUTECH, creating further connections between the University’s existing partnerships and a global education community committed to sustainability.
HUTECH joins the CANIE community in advancing meaningful climate action
As part of the CANIE Accord, HUTECH has registered 57 action commitments across five key areas: Leadership and Direction; Emissions Inventory and Reduction; Travel; Facilities, Operations and Procurement; and Climate Education. These commitments span policies, emissions measurement and reduction, travel, campus operations, and education, providing a foundation for the University to progressively integrate sustainable practices into its everyday activities.

Ms. Ainslie Moore, Chair of the CANIE Board, recognized HUTECH’s pioneering role in advancing a more climate-responsible approach to international education. She emphasized: “Joining the CANIE Accord demonstrates the commitment of international education leaders to taking meaningful action to address global warming while ensuring social equity.”
From HUTECH, Dr. Ly Thien Trang, Vice President of the University, noted that becoming the first higher education institution in Vietnam to join the CANIE Accord marks an important step in HUTECH’s efforts to connect internationalization with sustainable development.
"HUTECH has become the first higher education institution in Vietnam to join the CANIE Accord, marking an important milestone in the University’s strategic direction of aligning internationalization with sustainable development. We believe that education is not only about imparting knowledge; it also has a mission to cultivate in younger generations the awareness, sense of responsibility, and capacity to take action in the face of global challenges, particularly climate change. Through the participation in the CANIE Accord, HUTECH aims to expand collaboration with the international education community, promote green and sustainable initiatives within the University, gradually integrate climate education into curricula, and foster awareness of and responsibility for sustainable development among administrators, faculty members, staff, and students," she shared.
The initiative aligns with HUTECH’s sustainable development strategy and contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals
Becoming a signatory to the CANIE Accord opens up opportunities for HUTECH faculty members and students to engage with experts, access new initiatives, and expand international learning and collaboration.

The Climate Action Network for International Educators (CANIE) is a voluntary initiative established by members of the international education community worldwide to promote responsibility and action on climate change. Through open-access resources, specialized events, and networking activities, CANIE provides a platform for sharing experiences, raising awareness, and encouraging environmentally responsible practices in international education.
