As part of its efforts to expand international collaboration in medicine, a leadership delegation from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) visited China Medical University (CMU) in Taichung on October 30. The delegation learned how CMU integrates medical education with its hospital network, explored its research programs, and discussed opportunities for collaboration in the health sciences.
During the meeting, representatives from both universities shared their strengths in education and research and discussed their priorities in the health sciences. The HUTECH delegation was particularly interested in how CMU connects its academic programs, affiliated hospitals, and research centers to bring together classroom teaching, clinical training, and the use of medical technology.

A highlight of the visit was a tour of the Proton Therapy Center at China Medical University Hospital (CMUH). The delegation toured the facilities and learned how the ProBeam 360 system uses proton beams to deliver a concentrated dose of radiation to tumors while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. The tour gave the delegation a firsthand look at advances in radiation therapy and how CMU applies biomedical research to patient care.
Prof. Yi-Hung Chen presents research on how acupuncture and electroacupuncture relieve pain
In the research discussions, Prof. Yi-Hung Chen, Associate Dean of CMU’s College of Chinese Medicine, presented his work on neuropharmacology, the mechanisms behind pain relief from acupuncture and electroacupuncture, and the potential role of these therapies in treating neurological conditions. His research uses modern scientific methods to investigate how traditional therapies work and contribute to the development of evidence-based integrative medicine.
Dr. Yen-Liang Liu presents research on the use of AI to analyze cancer cells
Dr. Yen-Liang Liu, a researcher at CMU’s Center of Excellence for Cancer Biology and Precision Therapeutics, introduced the use of bioimaging, three-dimensional tumor models, and artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze cancer cells, assess drug responses, and develop treatments tailored to individual patients. The discussion gave the HUTECH delegation a closer look at how medicine, data science, and biomedical engineering can work together to improve patient care.

The visit builds on HUTECH and CMU’s collaboration in medical education and research
HUTECH and CMU signed a cooperation agreement in December 2024 covering academic exchange, interdisciplinary education, and medical research. In June 2025, the universities held a learning exchange on creating sustainable workplaces for vulnerable groups as part of a project funded by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. In March 2026, they discussed doctoral training and faculty development. Building on these activities, the visit opened up further opportunities for collaboration in education, faculty and student exchanges, and joint research.

China Medical University was founded in Taichung in 1958 as China Medical College and gained university status in 2003. It has three campuses and nine academic divisions, with particular strengths in modern medicine, traditional medicine, and biomedical technology. CMU integrates education with its hospital network and has three research centers of excellence whose work spans traditional medicine, drug development, cancer biology, and precision therapeutics. Its affiliated hospital is home to the first proton therapy center in central Taiwan, which began operating in July 2024.
