HUTECH co-hosts HESDI Forum 2026, advancing sustainability and digital innovation in higher education

AI, digital transformation, and emerging skills requirements are reshaping higher education, creating a growing need for innovation to prepare learners for the future.
Recently, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH), in collaboration with universities and international education organizations, co-hosted the Higher Education Sustainability and Digital Innovation Forum 2026 (HESDI Forum 2026). The online forum attracted more than 200 participants, including experts, higher education leaders, and scholars from Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, and China.
HUTECH joined universities and international education organizations in co-hosting HESDI Forum 2026
Under the theme “The Pursuit of Higher Education Sustainability toward Skills Development in the Digital Era: Theoretical Foundations and Practical Approaches,” the forum focused on advancing sustainable higher education while strengthening learners’ skills. Discussions covered digital transformation, AI applications in teaching and learning, future skills development, sustainable university governance, entrepreneurship education, digital citizenship, and university-industry-community collaboration.
As a speaker, Dr. Ly Thien Trang, Vice President of HUTECH, presented “Redefining Higher Education Sustainability in the Digital Era: Global Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities.” Against the backdrop of artificial intelligence, digital transformation, shifting skills demands, the green transition, and global uncertainties, her presentation highlighted a comprehensive approach to higher education sustainability encompassing environmental considerations, people, technology, educational quality, global responsibility, and adaptability to change.

Dr. Ly Thien Trang shared insights into higher education sustainability in the digital era
A key priority highlighted in the presentation was preparing future-ready learners with four core areas of competency: digital, green, human, and global competencies. In response to challenges posed by AI, skills gaps, and a rapidly changing educational landscape, universities need to promote flexible learning, skills-based curricula, green innovation, experiential learning, and international collaboration.
During the Q&A session, Dr. Ly Thien Trang was asked what leaders need to change to drive transformation. She emphasized that transformation begins with mindset. Leaders need to build consensus, encourage participation, and help their teams understand why change is necessary so that awareness can be translated into meaningful action.

The discussions at the forum also strengthened connections between HUTECH and international educational institutions, providing opportunities to exchange experiences in digital transformation, skills development, and approaches to sustainable higher education.

HESDI Forum 2026 was co-hosted by HUTECH alongside 10 educational institutions, research organizations, and international networks from across the region, including Bina Insani University (Indonesia), SEAMEO TED, Passage to ASEAN (P2A), the Asia-Pacific Consortium of Researchers and Educators (APCORE), the UNESCO International Research and Training Centre for Rural Education (UNESCO INRULED), Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Malaysia), and other international partners.
